Abortion Access Field Organizer

Summary

Lift Louisiana seeks a Field Organizer to oversee outreach and door-to-door canvassing for reproductive rights in Slidell, Louisiana.

The Field Organizer will develop and implement an innovative community organizing program that centers abortion justice, mobilizes new supporters, sustains existing support, and advances Lift Louisiana’s mission. As a Field Organizer, you’ll help build the people power we need to achieve abortion rights.

The primary responsibilities of this job include going door-to-door and talking to voters in the community about abortion, as well as outreach and base-building work to increase voter engagement on the issue of abortion access. The Field Organizer will oversee a team of staff and are responsible for recruiting, training and motivating your team to hit its goals. The Field Organizer also has additional responsibilities to map out canvassing territories, data management, and help carry out other campaign work.

The Field Team's operations motivate and empower voters to become more involved in creating change in our communities together.

About the Organization

Lift Louisiana’s mission is to build a better Louisiana by advocating for reproductive health, rights, and justice. We use litigation, legislation, policy advocacy with government agencies and private institutions, community engagement, and organizing to advance reproductive justice. In particular, Lift works to ensure access to pregnancy care, abortion services, comprehensive sex education, affordable contraception, gender affirming care, and to protect the rights of all pregnant people. Lift is committed to ensuring that individuals’ reproductive rights are not compromised because of their race, gender, class, age or ability, and believes that reproductive rights must be informed by broader racial and social justice considerations. We accomplish this work through strategic and impactful legal advocacy, litigation, policy initiatives, public education, and community organizing.

Lift Louisiana is a fiscally sponsored project of Tides Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, communicate, and implement a comprehensive, data-driven field plan

  • Manage canvassing operation, including but not limited to: tracking hours, ensuring team members meet expectations, and coordinating logistics, including managing supplies

  • Oversee administrative functions related to campaign goals, staff management, volunteer recruitment and general office management

  • Data management

  • Recruit, train, and manage paid canvassing staff

  • Coach, shadow, and make work plans with canvassing staff in the field

  • Evaluate staff performance and give ongoing feedback

  • Maintain regular communication with the Executive Director and Deep Canvassing Consultant, including but not limited to providing reports on canvasser performance and progress toward campaign goals

  • Establish a strong, inclusive, and supportive culture within the Field Team focused on accountability, specific goals, innovation, and sense of purpose

  • Develop regular reports on progress toward program objectives

  • Presentations and interviews with media about program

  • Work with organizational partners, may include strategy meetings, relationship building, joint events/actions

Skills and Requirements:

  • Knowledge and understanding of St. Tammany Parish and the New Orleans Suburbs

  • Understanding of the political landscape in Louisiana

  • Comfort discussing abortion and reproductive rights

  • Canvassing experience, volunteer experience, work with grassroots politics, campaigns/elections, and/or voter registration are preferred but not required.

  • Organizing in communities of color is preferred but not required.

  • Deep canvassing experience is a plus!

  • Program evaluation

  • Ability to execute multiple projects, set priorities, and follow through on plans

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-motivated

  • Inventive, creative, and problem-solving approach to challenges

  • Ability to manage a team of 5 – 10 people

  • Ability to to build positive relationships with staff, volunteers and supporters

  • Energetic and positive attitude

  • Alignment with Lift Louisiana’s values

  • Bilingual capacity in Spanish and Vietnamese is a plus!

  • Must have reliable transportation

  • Experience with VAN

  • Public speaking

Qualifications:

We are looking for people who have leadership experience and excellent communication skills, demonstrated commitment to reproductive justice, and who are dedicated to making lasting, positive change on important issues.

3 years of equivalent experience in canvassing, campaign organizing, community organizing or field organizing preferred.

Willing to work a flexible schedule some nights, and weekends, and some travel required.

Car and valid driver’s license required for in-state travel.

Work Environment:

This position requires in-state travel and extended periods of time walking outside.

Location:

This is a hybrid position. However, work must be performed in Louisiana. Co-working space will be available in Slidell, Louisiana.

Mileage reimbursement is given when employees use their own vehicle to get to turf.

Lift Louisiana is located in New Orleans.

Compensation:

The salary will be set at $39,200 for 7 months. This is a full time temporary position.
