The Power of a Conversation: How Doorstep Dialogues Change Minds
In September 2024, Lift Louisiana launched a new Abortion Equity Initiative to reduce stigma and create connections through deep canvassing. Today, we’re excited to introduce our Field Organizer Jennifer Bondio, in her own words.
She’s a crucial addition to our team as we intensify our efforts to protect and promote reproductive rights in Louisiana. This role is not just a job; it's a commitment to grassroots activism and a testament to the power of organized community action.
Meet Jennifer Bondio
I’m excited to share a bit about my journey and what led me to this pivotal role. Born and raised in Southeast Louisiana, I've called Slidell home for the last 18 years, deepening my roots and connection to our vibrant community. My path to activism is deeply personal, driven by a profound commitment to social justice and shaped significantly by my experiences as a mother to twin 15-year-old daughters. My love for them and my desire to see them achieve their highest potential reinforces my dedication to safeguarding reproductive freedoms—rights that are foundational to our democracy.

My first encounter with the issue of abortion came during my freshman year of college when my roommate underwent an abortion. Witnessing the judgment and stigma she faced left a lasting impression on me, highlighting the critical need for compassionate advocacy and informed support. At that time, I never imagined that judgment and stigma would give way to a complete revocation of abortion rights. We cannot have a true democracy if women are denied the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies. Restricting access to abortion care is not only an infringement on personal liberties but a dangerous precedent that threatens the very fabric of basic freedoms we take for granted.
Why Canvassing Matters
Canvassing, for me, is the heartbeat of activism. It's where change begins, one conversation at a time. My journey to becoming a Field Organizer felt like a calling. Over several months, I repeatedly came across the employment advertisement for the Field Organizer position. Each time, it resonated deeply with me, calling to me as a perfect fit for my skills and passions. However, the position was advertised as full-time, and I already had a full-time job that I did not intend to leave. Due to this, I hesitated to apply, torn between the opportunity and my current commitments. When the position came up out of the blue for a third time, I felt compelled to apply. This decision to finally apply was driven by a strong desire to make a real difference, even if it meant navigating complex scheduling challenges.
As I transitioned into the role, I quickly discovered the effectiveness of deep canvassing. Though it was a new skill for me, the profound impact of this approach quickly became apparent. Deep canvassing goes beyond traditional canvassing by engaging people in longer, reflective conversations that genuinely address their concerns and feelings about contentious issues like abortion rights.

During one of my early canvassing efforts, I shared my experiences with miscarriage and expressed my concerns about the impact of abortion bans on women’s ability to receive adequate pregnancy care in cases of miscarriage. The voter I was speaking with revealed that his wife had also experienced a miscarriage before the Dobbs decision and now hesitated to become pregnant again. He shared her fears that if another miscarriage occurred, she might not receive the necessary care, potentially putting her life at risk. This powerful conversation led the voter to shift from being noncommittal about restoring abortion care to becoming wholeheartedly committed to supporting it. This moment underscored the impact of sharing personal stories and the profound potential of deep canvassing to change hearts and minds.
The Deep Canvassing Program
Our deep canvassing program is designed to engage the community in meaningful conversations about reproductive rights. Launched in Slidell, this initiative was strategically chosen after polling red suburbs across Louisiana. The polls indicated that the majority of Slidell residents desire more access to reproductive healthcare, not less. This data provided an opening to meet our community where they are and revealed that our legislators are not voting in line with the will of the people. Through door-to-door interactions, we're not only spreading awareness but also gathering support to influence public policy. Over the next few months, our success will be measured by the number of doors knocked and the depth of conversations had, striving for a profound impact on community perspectives.
Her Vision for the Program
I envision this program as a catalyst for change in Louisiana. By fostering an environment of understanding and respect, we aim to reshape public opinion and encourage proactive participation to regain abortion rights.
We are supported in this endeavor by four passionate, motivated, and gifted canvassers whose dedication inspires me daily. Canvassing alongside them and sharing our stories and experiences during our end-of-canvass meals solidifies my belief that this canvassing pilot is just the beginning of an unstoppable statewide movement. Their enthusiasm and commitment not only fuel our progress but also affirm the transformative power of deep canvassing. Together, we are laying the groundwork for a broader, more inclusive movement that promises significant and sustainable impacts across Louisiana.
